On April 28th, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court issued an updated Emergency Order regarding the statewide judicial emergency currently in place.  The Order extends the emergency through June 1, 2020 (previously set to end on April 30, 2020).  The salient parts of the Order are as follows:

  • Generally, Pennsylvania Courts will be open for business on May 4, 2020, barring an already-entered local emergency order.  All in-person access is strictly limited either according to the terms of the new order, or a more restrictive order entered by the local court.

  • Any local declaration of a state of judicial emergency by a county past June 1, 2020 needs to provide reasoning as to why the extension is necessary.

  • State courts are encouraged to decide matters on the papers or conduct court proceedings through the use of advanced communication technologies.

  • Concerning Court filings, any papers or pleadings required to be filed between March 19th and May 8th shall be deemed to be filed timely if they are filed by the close of business on May 11, 2020.

  • Jury trials are suspended and will be scheduled for a date in the future.

  • Evictions and ejectments are suspended until May 11, 2020, at which point that suspension will cease.
